Many KLOCK and HELMER ancestors began to settle the Mohawk Valley of upstate New York beginning in the 1600s. Grandpa William Helmer Klock’s parents were Ira Martin Klock (who fought in the Civil War for the Union) and Mary (Helmer) Klock.

Do I have my great-grandfather’s name wrong? For the homes in the 1870 census, is he “Ira Klock, Age 51, Est. Birth 1818, Birthplace New York, White, Male, home: Little Falls, Herkimer, NY”

Was he the Ira Klock who served during the Civil War?
Ira Klock served with Co. F of the 152nd New York Infantry as a Private. (Union)

Was he the Ira Klock in the 1880 census?
Ira KLOCK, 62, <1818>, New York, Self, Married, White, Male, Little Falls, Herkimer, NY

In the 1880 census, was this the family?

Robert KLOCK, 26, <1854>, New York, Son, Single, White, Male, Little Falls, Herkimer, NY

In the 1870 census, there is a Libbie, who could be my grandfather’s sibling:
“Libbie Klock, Age 7, Est. Birth 1862, Birthplace New York, White, Female, home: Little Falls, Herkimer, NY”
In the 1880 census, there is a Libbie, who could be my grandfather’s sibling:

Parents & Family Members of William Helmer KLOCK:
His father: Ira Martin KLOCK (who died by drowning in Ottawa, Canada, where he had moved several years after serving in the Union Army during the Civil War)
His mother: Mary HELMER KLOCK --- may have died when William Helmer was young
His siblings:

· brothers named Fred and Robert
· sister called “Libby”, in photo with nephew named Alonzo CASLER (Libby’s son?)
· other siblings?

KLOCK family photos:

· Ira Martin Klock & his wife (1 with him in his officer’s Union uniform from the Civil War --- father & mother or step-mother of William Helmer Klock (that picture of the 2 of them came from Alfonso Klock, 10 West Monroe, Little Falls, NY, who remembered sitting on his Grandfather Klock's’ knee) --- sometime after the Civil War ended, Ira Martin Klock moved to Canada where he had businesses and eventually died there by drowning;
· “Bill” William Helmer Klock;
· Fred Klock (brother of William Helmer Klock) taken by C.G. Willett at 67 Mass. St. in Lawrence, Kansas;
· Robert Klock (brother of William Helmer Klock);
· Alonzo Casler and his wife Katie (William Helmer Klock’s nephew—son of his sister Libby);
· 9 tin-type photographs of William Helmer Klock & Agnes Mary Sobiech Klock (about the time they were married) & several others without names who may be Klock since there seems to be a family resemblance;
· “Willie” William Helmer Klock, Jr. (2nd son & 2nd child of William Helmer Klock & Agnes Mary Sobiech Klock) as a child of about 5 in 1891, taken in Fergus Falls, MN, and as a young adult;
· “Fonnie” Alfonso Silas Klock (4th son & 6th child of William Helmer Klock & Agnes Mary Sobiech Klock) with his nephew Fred Klock (son of William Helmer Klock, Jr.) in Drumright in about 1913, when Fred was about 3 or 4 years old and Uncle Fonnie was still upright;

William Helmer KLOCK was born in 1858 or 1859 or 1860 in Jacksonburg, Herkimer County, New York -- on the banks of the Mohawk River, between the Catskills on the south and the Adirondacks on the northeast (according to the delayed birth certificates for 2 of their sons, prepared after William Helmer Klock's death in 1937 by his wife Agnes Mary Sobiech Klock). Ira Martin Klock was served in the Union Army, then moved to Canada (Ontario area) some years after the Civil War ended. He started businesses there; one of those businesses was in the lumber industry. In order to get his inheritance, which he may never have received, William Helmer Klock went to visit his relatives after his father’s death, reportedly from drowning, in Canada. He also traveled to New Mexico, seeking relief for his asthma.

The SOBIECH family has been in the United States since about 1875. Grandma Agnes Mary (Sobiech) Klock's parents and family had lived in Prussia and Poland. I have heard that Grandma Klock had sisters, possibly half-sisters or step-sisters who were nuns, but I am uncertain about that information. Grandma was born in Poland; in 1943, she stated on delayed birth certificates for 2 of her sons that she did “not know where in Poland she was born”. Grandma Agnes Mary (Sobiech) Klock's parents were Jacob Sobiech and Mary Elizabeth (Starka Rossa) Sobiech. (Supposedly, the Catholic church has great records in Europe that we might be able to research.) Then, in about 1875, because of religious oppression, the Sobiech family sailed to the United States from Germany, settling in the area of Little Falls, Minnesota. That is where “Aggie” Agnes Mary Sobiech – who was to be our Grandmother Klock – met “Bill” William Helmer Klock – who was to be our Grandfather Klock – in the early 1880s, while he was working as an Engineer on the railroad and traveling through Minnesota on the trains.

The Sobiech family was unhappy that Agnes/”Aggie” had married “Bill” Klock, a man who was not Catholic. However, the two of them were married 11 January 188? (sometime in the 1880’s…there is a hole in the original marriage license where the last digit of the year should be) in Casselton, Dakota Territory (North Dakota became a state in 1889).

Original Marriage Certificate

This certifies that on the eleventh day of January in the year of our Lord 188? William H. Klock and Agnes Sobiech were by me united in marriage at Casselton, Dak according to the laws of the Territory of Dakota

H.M. Dyckman

Witnesses Nellie Walters Tenna Lockhart

Location: North & South Dakota both became states in 1889…
Casselton is near Fargo, North Dakota, which is just west of the Minnesota border.
Married: 11 January 188? in Casselton, Dakota Territory

Their first 3 children were born in Minnesota. Their oldest child Ira Martin Klock {named for his paternal grandfather} was born April 1884 in Minnesota. Their second son William Helmer Klock, Jr. was born in April 1886. Their first daughter Agnes Mary Klock was born in March 1891.

Bill and Aggie with their first 3 children went to Indian Territory (now Oklahoma) for the Land Rush of 1891, in which they acquired 160 acres***. (The first Land Rush in Indian Territory was in 1889.) Bill Klock staked one piece of land, then later bought and settled on another piece that someone else owned. That 160 acres in Avery (between Stroud & Cushing) is where they lived in a dugout with stone walls (a sod house) until they built their new home. Their other 8 children were born in Avery, Indian Territory, Oklahoma. That house was struck by lightning (which also struck Agnes Klock …while she was pregnant with Charles Ishmael Klock… and her son Alphonso Silas Klock, who was not yet 2 years old), and that original house burned in about 1899. They again lived in the dugout until their home was rebuilt.

In about 1911, after the birth of their 11th child, they moved to the Drumright, Oklahoma, where the Oil Boom Days had begun; all kinds of businesses were booming, too. Oklahoma became a state in 1907. They had several businesses in the Drumright area; some of these were a grocery and feed store (which they operated until Bill Klock died in 1937), restaurants (Aggie Klock must have been a great cook) – one was a “chili” restaurant, dairy products, farm crops, etc. Grandma worked outside of the home in the businesses, while Aunt Annie helped with her younger brothers and kept the family home; Annie was a teenager when they moved to Drumright.

Grandpa “Bill” William Helmer Klock died in 1937 at their family home, northeast of Drumright – as a result of heart failure from many years of suffering with asthma. Grandma “Aggie” Agnes Mary (Sobiech) Klock died in 1943 at their family home, northeast of Drumright – as a result of a stroke, brought on by years of suffering with high blood pressure. They are both buried in the Klock family plot in Fairlawn Cemetery, north of Cushing, Oklahoma.

In about 1955, the building that housed their Klock grocery store was still standing at 309 South Ohio in Drumright, Oklahoma. That building was torn down to move a house in for Annie to live in with brothers Rob and Fonnie… where the 3 moved into town after living many years on the farm north of Drumright, land which they had leased for decades. Annie Klock lived in that home in Drumright until she died in 1986.

Lists of first land owners and therefore first families of Lincoln County. These names are not alphabetized in order to preserve physical proximity of families. Often, friends and relatives had adjacent properties. Use your browser "Edit -> Find in page" function to search for names.

NOTE: These are not necessarily the names of the people who were successful in the Land Run of 1891, but are the people who had the properties in 1903. To further research the land, note the description of the property you are interested in (section, township, and range numbers) and contact the Clerk of the County Court, Chandler, OK.

The usual disclaimer about typos applies here.

There was some difficulty transcribing the names as they are hand-written in each quarter-section or half-quarter-section. Please refer to an original copy if you have questions on the spelling of names, etc. The map of each township also has physical features and notations for Indian allotment. The museum in Chandler has an original for reference.

Originally printed in Oklahoma Land Run of '91 - a Lincoln County Centennial Salute, a souvenir booklet by the Lincoln County Historical Society and used with permission of the Lincoln County Historical Society.
