WOMAN AND UNBORN SON KILLED IN MADRID CRASH.
James R. Donnelly, Times Staff Writer.
Madrid.

A Madrid woman and her unborn son died late Saturday after a Norwood man drove past a stop sign and collided with their car.

Cathy L. Sharpe, 28, of 162 Rooky Road, Madrid, was pronounced dead in the emergency room of Canton-Potsdam Hospital, Potsdam, following the accident about 10:18 p.m. Saturday at county routes 30 and 31 in the tow n of Madrid.

Mrs. Sharpe was seven months pregnant and her unborn son, who was to be named Garrett S. Sharpe, was also declared dead at the hospital.

Mrs. Sharpe was on County Route 30, Madrid-Lisbon Road, returning home from Madrid in a 1993 Pontiac, after visiting her mother when the accident took place, St. Lawrence County sheriff's deputies said.

Richard P. Fogarty, 53, of 40 S. Main St., Norwood, who was on County Route 31, Madrid-Chipman Road, was returning to his home after watching his son play basketball at Lisbon Central School. He failed to stop at a stop sign, deputies said. His 1985 Chevrolet hit the Sharpe car on the driver's side. It then ran off the highway and struck a road sign and large tree, deputies said.

The Fogarty car also ran off the road. It glanced off one tree and came to rest against another, deputies said.

Mrs. Sharpe and her daughter, Lauren E. Sharpe, 6, were taken to Canton-Potsdam Hospital by Madrid Rescue Squad. Mrs. Sharpe was declared dead about 11 p.m. Death was attributed to head injuries, deputies said. I t was not known if she was wearing a seat belt, they said.

Lauren Sharpe was treated for a hand injury and released, deputies said.

Mr. Fogarty declined medical treatment at the accident scene, deputies said. His son, Joseph Fogarty, 17, was not injured.

Richard Fogarty was charged with failure to stop at a stop sign, deputies said.

The accident remains under investigation and the results will be turned over to St. Lawrence County District Attorney Jerome J. Richards for review, Detective Sergeant Augustus D. Burns said.

At this time, Mr. Burns said, it appears driver inattention on the part of Mr. Fogarty was the major cause of the accident.

“He just didn't see the sign," said Mr. Burns. "There was no indication of alcohol involvement on anyone's part.”

Mrs. Sharpe had been residence manager of the United Cerebral Palsy Adult Home, Potsdam, for five years.

Born Dec. 16, 1970, in Potsdam, daughter of Glenn and Judy Hooper S immons, she was a 1989 graduate of Madrid-Waddington Central School and attended Potsdam State University College for three years. She married Scott C. Sharpe on May 6, 1995, at the First Presbyterian Church, Ogdensburg, with the Rev. Thomas Patterson officiating.

Surviving besides her husband and daughter are her father, of Morristown; her mother, of Madrid; a stepson, Nicholas Jackman, Parishville; a stepdaughter, Morgan Sharpe, Madrid; her maternal grandmother, Katherine Hooper, Hannawa Falls; her paternal grandfather, Leon "Joe" Simmons, Rensselaer Falls; a brother, Craig Simmons, Madrid, and several uncles, aunts and nieces.

The funeral will be at noon Wednesday at Scotch Presbyterian Church, Chipman, with the Rev. Janice Fife officiating. Burial will be in Brookside Cemetery, Waddington.
